Our first idea.

Today we made a mindmap of all the things we would associate with Betrayal;

Prelimanary Study 2; Eastenders.

Preliminary Study 2; Eastenders.

We are looking at a soap opera called Eastenders, Eastenders is set in the East of London it has been running since 1985. It is a very popular and highly loved programme and always has a exciting story line. The story line we are looking at is the Ben Mitchell and Phil Mitchell story. Ben is jealous because his dad Phil never has time for him, doesn’t pay attention to him, leaves him out and does not have faith in him. Phil dedicates all his to his fostered son Jay. Because of this Ben betrays Phil by going behind his back and telling the police his biggest secrets.

Betrayal is represented in this because Ben keeps going behind Phils back telling his biggest secrets and all of his past so that he will get arrested just simply because of his jealousy. Also Ben is lying to Phil everyday and acting like it is normal because Phil has no idea what Ben has done.
I think Eastenders is suitable for any age, so it is addressed for families. This is because it is highly suitable for people at an elderly age to people in their childhood. This is because there is not any foal language and it is aired at a suitable time which is at either at seven thirty or eight o’clock.
My personal response on Eastenders is that I love the programme. I think the story line is always very effective and the story line between Ben and Phil has always been exciting to watch. I think it is very realistic in many ways because it would be the same as it would be if the same thing was ever to happen to a normal person. The thing I found most interesting is the fact Ben and Phil are extremely good actors, they can show their emotion really well and are in character all the time!
The style of Eastenders is very naturalistic. The camera work is very realistic it makes you feel as if you are part of it or you are there with them, Also they have a lot of close ups, the close ups catch really intense moments and it shows you how the characters are feeling just by the expression on their face. The set is also very realistic because it’s a real house, garage, etc. The sound effects are diagetic for example you actually hear the door shutting unlike if it was a musical they would add the sound effects in. The lighting is the same as any lighting would be in the day time and the costume they are just regular costumes an average person would wear. The end of the episode there is a close up on Ben and he says happy birthday dad in a very sarcastic way, after he says that as they call them the ‘dum dum dums’ are added in as a cliff hanger. This makes it a whole lot more dramatic, exciting and effective for the viewers. When it is close up it really shows his emotion and it is really good.
When Ben stalls the car, Phil suggests Jay drives it instead, leaving Ben humiliated, jealous and vengeful

Preliminary Study 1; Ghost the Musical.

Our preliminary study is Ghost the musical. It is about a couple from New York called Sam and Molly who are madly in love. Molly is a potter and Sam works in a bank. In Sams bank he suspects some foul play going on and so, he finds out that it is his bestest friend doing dodgy work in the bank. His friend kills Sam because no one must know what he has been up to. Sam comes back as a ghost and haunts Molly because her and the killer are getting friendly and he is worried something will happen to Molly. So, Sam tries to tell Molly through a physic what happens to him. So she is safe.
This relates back to betrayal because his best friend went behind his back doing stuff in his bank and he found out so that means the ‘’best friend’’ would have to kill him so no one would find out what he has been doing. Then he tried to get friendly with Molly now that he was not here because he knew he could get her. So it’s betrayl against friendship.
The target audience is for people age 16 and above. This is because there’s a lot of violence and killing involved. Also it can be for people who love the film as Ghost is a very popular film so the audience was brought into see it as soon as the see that they have made it a musical. It has been out for a number of years so people have grown on it and will love the fact they have made a live musical of it. It’s a moderne performance and people like moderne things.
My personal responce to the piece is that I really enjoyed it. I have never watched the film before in my life but by watching the trailer I got very interested in the preformance. It was very interesting and colourful. It was majourly eye catching and really caught my attention. It made me want to watch the whole thing or go and see it for myself. I liked the bright lights and the fact there was always something going on. It was also very effective and heart warming because you really get to know the characters so you feel sorry for them when something happens. I enjoyed how they used a lot of multi media throughout, I thought it was very cool.
The style of the work is a musical because it involves lots of singing, dancing and acting. The genre is romantic and super natural like a twilight. There was three parts that stood out to me the most. The part where the physic women is singing and dancing. It is very colourful and contains a majour amout of flashing lights. It is very exciting and powerful. It really catches your attention. There is loads of multi media used in the back there’s like crabs and cocktail glasses projected on the back. I suppose it shows that she is a really powerful and bold character. There’s lots of dancers in the back mimicing the women. One of the other parts that stood out was the bit where Sam is killed. Before it shows Sam and Molly on the train, this is so effective and to me is the best use of multi media in the whole thing because you can actually see what looks like a train riding along the track with Sam and Molly on it, It is so clever. They are fighting on the train and it looks so cool because it looks like an actual train but you can see through it and see what is going on inside. At one bit when they’re fighting he pushes him out of the train doors and thety actually open like train doors would. It is quite flashy and there’s a lot of moving around going on. When they eventually stop fighting and Sam is safe and away him and Molly cuddle together because they think they’re safe but then Sam’s friend comes and shoots Sam. At this part there’s a heart beat and a heart monitor in the back. It is so effective and heart warming. I love this part it stands out so much. Another effective bit is the last big where Molly puts on the radio and their song comes and a very loud heartbeat plays which I believe is Sams heartbeat. It is so cute. The lighting is warm and the sounds are loud.
Lighting
One of the main methods is definatly the lighting. There’s very bright lights and they were extreemly flashy and eye catching. When Molly and Sam were together the lighting was very warm like red and pink colours. Also, I noticed If the character was dead their spotlight was blue as if they are alive their lights were bright like yellowy colours. This really does take some skill, It was so effective and clever.
The technology and set.
There is a lot of lighting used and there’s always dancers on the set. There was a lot of projections at the back to show where they were at that point of the performance for example if they were walking through the city at night there was big bright bulidings in the back. It used a lot of multi media throughout. I noticed the projections were almost mimicing the actors of what they were doing like if they walked forward the projection also would go forward.
Costumes.
The costumes were very simple and haven’t had much effort put into them they were more focused on the performance. Obviously they did make effort on them but when I’m trying to say is that it was not a majour aspect. They just wore plain sympol colours.
